Sutra

Nov 09 til Jan 10

Tuesday nights @ Sutra became our regular, it was Tony Touch’s night full of good hip hop. Saw Tony Touch, Questlove, Evil Dee, D-Nice, MC Lyte & June spin. Had the pleasure of meeting the likes of Kool Herc, Pete Rock and Statik Selektah there. With people like Just Blaze, Jeru the Damaja etc just hanging out.

Where Brooklyn at???

Oct & Nov 2009

We went to Brooklyn Bowl a couple times, once to see Talib Kweli, Jean Grae & Hi-Tek and another to see Green Lantern and Boogie Blind spin. This venue is just awesome, a combined bowling alley and concert venue, we got pretty retarded there on our second night in New York.

GOOD TIMES @ APT

Nov & Dec 2009

Monday and Wednesdays @ APT were a regular spot for us, with hip hop on Mondays with a rotation of DJs like Scratch, Lord Finesse and Boogie Blind. Wednesday nights were my favourite with Rich Medina spinnin soul and hip hop. Amy and I fell in love when we first arrived and Rich was spinnin a Dwele tune.

Chung King

December 2009

Amy, Cat, Belle and Myself were invited to Chung King Studios for a private party and to also celebrate Amy's Birthday. I was so excited to be able to go, and we had a private tour of all the studio rooms. I had chills walking around knowing who has graced these studios. I'm so appreciative and lucky to have been there, as the studio's have now recently closed and are in the middle of relocating. Big thanks to Swa and Tamir.

Dedicated to TT

November 2009

With all the partying in NY came a lot of FAIL moments, this post is dedicated to -

TAMIA aka Lady T aka TT

Found at the bar with drink in hand 99% of the time unless she's busting out the running man in her 6 inch heels on the dance floor. Drama lover. General trooper and last one standing. Warning: profanity and bitchassness included.

And to Ammo, who lasted maybe 30 min at APT, made friends with the wall

HIP HOP

Nov 2009 - Jan 2010

With a love for hip hop and soul, of course New York was one of the cities I wanted to experience. This included taking in as much as possible and hitting up a lot of shows.

In Australia we pay anything from $35-$100 to see artists like these, in New York I paid from $10-$30 for a ticket. Eat your heart out.

Who I saw-

Lyfe Jennings
The Roots
Ghostface
Slick Rick
Daniel Merriweather
Goodie Mob
Warren G
Roc Raida Tribute- Lord Finesse, Lord Sear, Large Professor, Immortal Technique, Brand Nubian, Jazzy Jay, Smiff and Wessun, The Beatnuts, Beatminerz (DJ Evil Dee & Walt)
Talib Kweli
Jean Grae
Hi-Tek
DJ Premier
K-Salaam & Beatnick
Keith Sweat
Raphael Saadiq
Q-Tip
DJ Nu-Mark
Donny Goines
Melo-X
Torae
Skyzoo
Jesse Boykins
Eric Roberson
Ryan Leslie

Large Professor @ Roc Raida Tribute - SOBs

Immortal Technique @ Roc Raida Tribute - SOBs

Warren G @ The Bowery Ballroom. It was his birthday and there were only maybe 50 people or so in the crowd and he didnt care.

Keith Sweat @ BB King. We just had to go and see him, wasnt as lame as we thought, haha. He also spat on Amy while singing, a defining moment for her.

Jesse Boykins @ SOBs. Amy and I had been hanging to see Jesse live, best night!

Lyfe Jennings @ BB King

Q-Tip & Ali Shaheed came out on stage at the Raphael Saadiq show during 'get involved', pant wetting material for me, hahha

Ode to Southpaw

November 2009

We spent a few Saturdays at Southpaw experiencing the glory of the night that is THE RUB (Cosmo Baker & DJ Ayers). This place gets packed to the rim, body to body, sweaty dancefloor awesomeness. My first night there I was obviously not drunk enough and struggled in the crowd for air, luckily we found an escape backstage thanks to Tamir, and danced our asses off.

Like Questlove said, I would love a 'I SURVIVED SOUTHPAW' t-shirt.

The most traumatic part for me was the toilets (see below). Yes, thats right, they are CURTAINS! No doors on the toilet cubicles, just a sheet of material. It was probably the most awkward pee of my life, sitting there afraid someone would peep through.

My tip: If you dont have a friend on the look out for you, make sure your feet are sticking out from under the curtain
